Nurturing the Spirit Succeeding Together Learning for Life

Music at St. George’s C.E. Primary school and Nursery

Music is an integral part of school life at St George’s C.E. Primary School and Nursery. Our most focused learning takes place when we are listening carefully and our musical experiences at St George’s seek to heighten our listening skills.

The whole school takes part in Musical Praise on a weekly basis, in which we seek to express the meaning of the song or hymn by ensuring an understanding of the words employed and by exploring musical devices such as dynamics, phrasing and articulation. We also work on our posture, breathing and pitching skill to enable us to produce our best sound and to include harmonies in our singing. At St. George’s, we aim to sing with confidence and meaning/expression.

We have a school orchestra, consisting of 11 players, which rehearse each week with the aim of enhancing and leading school worship. So far, they have gained enough sight-reading skill to play for special occasion services with support from an accompanist and are currently developing their ensemble skills to enable them to lead the singing, independently, on a more regular basis.

The Year 3 children have been provided with an opportunity to have class music lessons featuring a specific instrument. Their lessons focus on listening, rhythm and pitch skills and on the technical requirements of playing a violin. They also explore all orchestral instruments and listen to a range of musical styles and genres.

Many children also opt to have lessons on musical instruments and at St George’s we are currently able offer lessons on the following instruments through our supplier, ‘Severn Arts’:

Guitar, flute, cello/bass, violin.
